Today is the 125th birthday of Bessie Coleman of Google Doodle Fame. Coleman was the first African American/Native American woman to hold a pilot license. American flight schools back then were not exactly welcoming to women, nor blacks for that matter. In the end, she had to learn French and travel to France in order to get her license from Fédération Aéronautique Internationale. She was the first woman to do so. That was back in 1921.
Today, almost 100 years later, only 3% of airline pilots are women. I only ever encountered one. She was the captain of a small HOP! aircraft, taking me (and the other passengers) from Amsterdam to Strasbourg. And she was French!
